Interview Tip of the Month: Stay Safe on the Job in Winter Weather

Winter weather creates potential hazards on the job. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) urges workers to take precautions and focus on safety. Be aware of these risks winter weather can cause:

  1. Slippery surfaces. Take short steps and walk at a slower pace to react quickly to changes in traction. Wear warm shoes or boots with good rubber treads when working or walking outside.
  2. Cold. Low temperatures and wind cause heat to rapidly leave the body. Dress appropriately for the weather (i.e., wear layers, gloves, hats, scarves) to reduce the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.
  3. Carbon monoxide poisoning. During the winter months, power outages, closed environments and alternative sources for fueling/heating may increase the potential for carbon monoxide to build up in the workplace. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning, which include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion, and notify your assignment supervisor if you or someone else experiences them on the job.
